A film written and directed by Cassidy Parker Knight, starring Emory Sharplin. In “To Be Skinny,” a young girl, Laura, takes her obsession with being beautiful to new and unhealthy extremes when she decides to lose a drastic amount of weight. Specifically, this film targets the unrealistic portrayal of women in media and the effects it can have on self-esteem. While lots of uncontrollable factors contribute to eating disorders, one factor that is controllable is how the media portrays the “regular” girl. I made this film to examine how the media affects one teenage girl and how she ends up reconciling her own body with what the world is telling her.
